Cultural Specifics of France

Refined etiquette, politeness, and respect – these aspects are paramount to French culture, whether in daily, professional, or social interactions. Art, fashion, and culinary excellence also have their special place in France, where people believe life should be enjoyed and celebrated. Dining is an important part of the day rather than just a quick necessity and it is often spent socializing and relaxing. During social gatherings, guests may bring a small gift for the host, such as flowers or wine. When greeting, people go for a firm handshake or a light kiss on both cheeks.

In France, even conversation is considered a form of art and having intellectual and well-articulated discussions comes naturally to people.

Business Culture in France

The corporate culture in France is often hierarchical and the management style follows a top-down approach.[ZL1]  Although people value organizational structures and ranks, they do not shy away from engaging in passionate, well-mannered arguments with colleagues and peers. It can take time for internationals to get used to the direct and honest communication practiced by the French, but maintaining proper eye contact when speaking can help signal respect and genuine interest. Non-EU/EEA international students in France need to secure a long-stay student visa (VLS-TS). To acquire it, MBA applicants have to present proof of enrollment in a recognized institution, sufficient financial resources, health insurance, and accommodation details. When they arrive in France, students have three months to validate their visa. Those with a VLS-TS visa also have the opportunity to work up to 964 hours per year (approximately 20 hours per week) without needing a separate work permit.
